Vellore & Yelagiri Part 2

Yelagiri, You MUST go !!

If I were to give you one compelling reason to go and visit Yelagiri, it would be this…

How would you like to be the host and play the most favorite tree for a bunch of beautiful brightly colored and some exotic birds. For as much time as you wish.
Birds such as these ..

And these and more…

And let them perch on your outstretched arms, peck and eat the sunflower seed from your palms.

The moment you enter this aviary, a swarm of birds will fly right at you, flutter their wings right into your face and start finding footholds to perch on you.
Your head, your shoulders, palms, wrist, fingers, on your back pack, your handbag.

At first you will feel scared and unnerved, but after a few minutes you will start enjoying the sensation of their light weights resting on your arms, the feeling of their small claws gripping your arms , the weight of the big one trying to balance on your head and the small pricks of their beaks on your palms as they peck at each seed.

This big one sat on my wrist comfortably, ate up all the seeds and then tentatively started to sample my thumb nail.

And I braced myself for the right moment when I would feel the pressure of his beak  before quickly shrug him off my hand.  But just then he looked up at me as if saying, ‘that got you scared , didn’t ya?’ and he showed off his beak proudly.

But the parakeet on my left shoulder was not that sporting and she took a sharp nibble at my earlobe and I winced in pain before the attendant shooed her off.

And if you are a weak heart but still want to have this experience, then wear a full sleeved T-Shirt, and a hat and gloves and a mask to cover your nose and mouth.
But that won’t be fun, I bet!

Apart from this aviary the Fundera park also has rabbits, guinea pigs, ponies, calf. You can pet these, feed the ostrich couple, see a variety of birds, talk to Matilda the white goose and watch your kids have a lot of fun!

Yelagiri is 160 kms (4 hours drive)  by road Banglore-Hosur-Krishnagiri-Vaniyambadi- Ponneri - Yelagiri.
The last stretch of 35 min drive up the hill is wonderful providing a scenic view of the land below. The hairpin bends are steep, but easy to negotiate.

There is not much of a  town center or a mall road like you have in in most hill stations. A short stretch of Mangalam road serves as the hub of Yelagiri and all tourist spots  and Auto stand are around this .

Thankfully Yelagiri is not very popular and well known. So it has not yet been invaded by scores of resorts, brightly painted boarding lodges, restaurants. Nor will you find rows of shops  selling dried herbs, natural oils & spices, scarves and walking sticks. Nor plastic toys (made in China) and coffee branch glass topped tables, bamboo vases, painted and carved wood figurines, masks  etc etc. And none of those huge jarring advertisements and signage & posters either!

And to keep folks (and newly wed couples) busy, there are a lot of activity places like the lake & boating, the fruit garden, the Herbal garden, many nurseries. And for the adventurous there is the adventure club offering trekking etc. There was paragliding once but discontinued now.

So you got it ?
A nice quite place still preserved in its pristine hilly environment. Very quite and chilly most times. Nice friendly people . There are fair number of hotels and resorts  spaced far apart and a few of them are far away in well maintained exclusive resort enclosures shouldered by huge trees on one side and giving you a spectacular view  of the green fields and grassy land on the other.

And there are two well maintained temples as well.
The Perumal Kovil with its beautifully painted sloping path (Yaanai adi padam/elephant pathway) and a goshala (cowshed)

and a Murugan temple,as expected perched on a small hillock along with a Ganesha sannidhi (shrine).

Early morning we went for a walk. Saw 2 brown cows (A2 desi cows) and a healthy calf.  One villager carrying a stack of long green grass. No one else. Peaceful silence broken by occasional chirping of invisible birds and the soft constant  rustling of a stream that ran through the dense undergrowth,  stocky trees and thick bushes. As we were returning the weather suddenly changed. The sun totally shadowed by clouds and a dense mist rolled from the hills .

And if you need to de-stress and chill out, there is no better place than Yelagiri.
Just check into one of these remote resorts.
Chances are there would be no signal and your smart phone will not fire up every now and then with your mail and WhatsApp notifications.

And you take nice slow walks in the mornings and evenings listening to your favorite music or your audio book. And you eat and drink inside your balcony watching the silent downpour. And you stretch up on the large sofa and read a book or solve today's crossword. And then have multiple rounds of chai / coffee. And go for a walk again in the thick mist breathing in the microscopic droplets of water, or into the thin drizzle – you hair coated with a thin film of water, your shoulders damp and your shoes soggy, your nose and ear tips slightly numb due to the chill. And come back and have a hot bath. And stretch out again to have a short nap. And watch cartoons and etc & etc .

And we did just that. 2 days of peace.
Far far away from the HAL engine testing sound, the high pitched roar of the army transport plane flying overhead, the noisy take off and landing of the Mirage fighter jets, the constant metallic whine of the helicopter making their sorties, and the traffic jams, the occasional whiff of the drain smell, the irritating ringing of the front door bell at odd times.

On our way down the hill, the cloud cover caught up with us .
Less than 10 meters visibility.

And we saw families of monkeys huddle together for warmth against the chilly weather.

And the only reason why I could not give this trip a perfect 10 is that nowhere on the road side (or in the resort) I could get a large mug of piping hot filter coffee and a large plate of hot vazhakai bajji and crispy vengaya pakoda!!
Vazhakai bajji & vengaya pakoda = raw banana fritters & onion pakora.

Back home finally.
And back to the daily grind – starting with washing our 4 day-load of soiled clothes!

Rajyotsava Day Celebrations @ Sobha Palladian.

We celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava Day at Sobha Palladian on 1 Nov 2019.
And we were honored with the presence of our Corporator N Ramesh and his two friends during this event.

A short summary of the event by Jayashree Srinivasan & Krish..

Our Corporator N Ramesh arrived promptly on time, even as we were busily sending  successive Whats App messages and requesting residents to assemble.

The flagpole and the area around it was beautifully decorated with flowers, strands of bright yellow and orange marigolds and the map of Karnataka filled with yellow and red flower petals – the Karnataka State Flag colors. Yellow color represents turmeric and red color represents kumkum.. And  a tall shining traditional brass lamp.

And the PA system struck up a lively Rajkumar hit song ..
Huttidare kannada naadalli huttabeku
Mettidare kannada manna mettabeku

With a short welcome speech, MC Veena Shivanna kicked off the program by inviting our chief guest N Ramesh , his aides and  SP Management Committee to light the traditional lamp.

This was followed by the calm and soothing voice of Prabha singing an invocation song to Lord Ganesha.
"Worship Ganesha, or Gajamukha, before you start any work, for the work to become successful".

Umashanker then took over the stage.
He gave the Welcome note for the 64th Kannada Rajyotsava  day being celebrated at Sobha Palladian. A warm welcome to all the assembled Shobha Palladian residents and after that, Corporator N Ramesh and his aides.

He introduced Corporator N Ramesh and  spoke about his work towards public.
He is the Corporator for  86 Ward of Marathahalli & he Is doing great service in getting concrete roads constructed, getting drains cleared and ensuring money is allocated for major infrastructural work in the ward. He is ensuring proper implementation of building proper concrete wall embankment for the rajakaluve/nala behind Sobha Palladian.
He responds promptly and takes prompt action too.

Umashankar then requested SP President to welcome him on stage and do honor by giving a flower bouquet, and the secretory to put the Yellow and Red (state colors)shawl on his shoulders and offer sweets to him. Similar shawls were also offered to his two friends who attended the function along with Corporator.

And then they all assembled near the flagpole to unfurl the Karnataka state flag.

A quick wiki on Karnataka..
Karnataka  was formed on 1 November 1956, with the passage of the States Reorganisation Act. Originally known as the State of Mysore, it was renamed Karnataka in 1973. The state corresponds to the Carnatic region.
Karnataka also contains some of the only villages in India where Sanskrit is primarily spoken.
Like Mattur & Hosahalli.

Veena Shivanna, in her address  spoke about how Kannada is not just a language but an emotion. It connects people from various regions.
“Kannada is a rich language and we have got 8 "Gnana Peeta" awards and our poets / writers not only write about language but also use that as a medium to bring in social changes.”

Kuvempu Dr. Puttappa, in one of his works mentions how Kannada can be used as a
tool to evoke responsibility in individuals.
One more poet, G.P.RajaRatnam emotes his love towards language through his work.
He even went to the extent of saying that  he would continue speaking through his nose  if
someone were to cut off  his tongue!!
And we all know Dr. Rajkumar, the iconic superstars of Kannada & the film industry and his famous & patriotic Kannada songs.

Karnataka also has a special place in the world of Indian classical music, with both Karnataka (Carnatic) and Hindustani styles finding place in the state.. Purandara Dasa, one of the most revered Haridasas, is known as the Karnataka Sangeeta Pitamaha ('Father of Carnatic music). Celebrated Hindustani musicians like Gangubai HangalMallikarjun MansurBhimsen JoshiBasavaraja RajaguruSawai Gandharva and several others hail from Karnataka. (Ref Wiki)

Corporator Ramesh expressed his appreciation for  Sobha Palladian community for taking the initiative to celebrate  the Kannada Rajyotsava Day. He also called the residents to learn Kannada language and feel proud to be part of our state. He also requested the CEOs and other  residents to give special consideration to Kannada people and offer them jobs.
He also appreciated us for keeping Kannada speaking house keeping staff.

We had drawn his attention to the drain that flows next to our compound wall.He mentioned that he has budgeted some money towards the construction of the wall across the Nala. He did take the name of Sri Aravind Limbavali, the Legislative elective member and referred to his discussion with him about the Nala and respective sewage works. Work on building side walls to protect our boundary wall is expected to start in January next year.

His website quotes, “N Ramesh, Corporator Marathalli, is an able and visionary leader. He is a dedicated and hardworking leader for the people, to the people. His passion for delivery has made him a powerful administrator who achieves results with great ideas and innovative approach”
You can see him in action and his hands-on approach in clearing drains.

And we concluded with a "Mangala Geethe" by Anand Kulkarni who with a wonderful and  melodious voice sang a  Purandara Dasa kirthana.
A  prayer where he  seeks the blessings of the almighty.
The benevolence of Lord of 'Lakshmi' – Vishnu to make him wealthy and prosperous.
A long life from Vanipati, Bramha.
He prays to Lord Shiva who swallowed all the poison that came out at the time of Samudramanthana, to stand by him and help him during the difficult and testing time.
To Siddhivinayaka to keep all obstacles away from the path of success to enable him to achieve what-ever he desires.
He invokes blessings of  Dhanvantari, the God of medicine to keep him hale and healthy.
Lastly, he requests Guru Madhvaraya and Purandaradas to bestow their blessings on him till the end of his life and treat him as their own.

This is one prayer by a devotee  to ALL IN ONE GOD, representing all the devotees who surrender themselves to the ALMIGHTY. And  he hails all the Gods to help him.

Finally a vote of thanks proposed by Jahnavi, appreciating Corporator N Ramesh and his colleagues for taking their time off to attend to our function and to all the residents for thetr active participation.

And then it was Modelling and group photo  session !!!

Halloween @ Sobha Palladian Oct 2019

I write this picture blog specially for all the children in Sobha Palladian. What an enthusiastic show they put up ! Pl share this write up with your kids.
And we had 100% participation for the Halloween@Sobha Palladian Oct 2019.
And they turned out in their horrible best.
And many were  dressed to kill, literally!
And a big thank you to all those sporting moms and dads for their painstaking efforts in making their children look as bad and ugly and gruesome and terrible as possible!!

So lets give these children & their parents a loud shout out and KUDOS!
Your are the the best. Horribly the best.
And you are all Absolutely & Awfully Awesome (AAA Rating). Each one of you !!!

Begin :
I approach a big glowing red-eyed and wide open mouthed carved pumpkin and ask, ‘So how is Halloween?’
And instead of a sob story that I was expecting, I got..
‘It’s the best thing that can ever happen to any pumpkin’,  he (or she) answered brightly.
And with surprise I ask, How come ??
And the big fat one with glittering eyes answered..
Dude, Look at  all the other options we have.
We could get all chopped into tiny bits, rubbed with salt over our wounds, smothered with red chill powder and spicy masala and then fried with oil in a sauce pan over a slow fire.
Or we can get chopped up, steamed in a  pressure cooker and then dumped into a pot of boiling sambar.
Or we could get chopped and steamed and mercilessly ground and boiled with spices and vinegar and coloring agents and turned into a blood- red thick gooey liquid which is sold off as cheap tomato sauce!!
Or we could get finely grated and baked in an oven for your favorite ‘Pumpkin Fairy Cake’!!

But in Halloween at least, we suffer only from knife wounds and there is no further torture.
And I agreed. No wonder all of you are so happy - shining eyes and a wide laughing mouth!!

Next I catch a roving vampire and inquire, ‘How are the treats coming?’
‘Don’t ask’, he says in an exasperated tone, ‘You Palladians are so dumb’!
None of you even had the courtesy to offer me even a single drop of blood!
Do you folks seriously believe we vampires survive on chocolates, cookies and cakes??
And I quickly took a step back before his anger got the worse of him.

Halloween this time was different.
Not many pumpkins were butchered this time. And hence the mess in the Clubhouse was lesser. Experienced Knives were wielded with expertise, the gooey  innards of each pumpkin  scooped out quickly, jagged teeth were cut and eyes gouged out .

And finally the poor pumpkins were lit up with a lamp inside and displayed ! and they stayed griming throughout the night.

The number or witches and Dracula and  pirates and other eerie denizens of the dark world were much more.

And this time the Chefs from Hotel Transylvania (of the animated movie fame) put up an elaborate buffet – a spectacular show of imaginations running wild !!

And we had freshly chopped fingers (no thumbs),
varieties of squishy gelatino eyeballs, blood worms sucking bone marrows
lower and upper dentures, chocolate coated baked coffins (with juicy bodies inside),
chopped liver jelly cubes with fresh blood-spread on top , and the pumpkin puke pasta!!!

And you can place bulk orders for any of these delicacies on ‘Awsome Anusha’s Kitchen’ website. This  baker also has special gift packs of her famous ‘running nose and smelly feet’  candies.
And if you ever, by chance, go to her shop and  make your payment, be sure to check your change and count your own fingers. She makes no guarantee for any of your missing fingers
And for even more grotesque varieties you can approach ‘Vinaya&Preeti’s Parlor’ @ Block 1  Floor # 6.
Caution & Waring : Most often the shoppers do not return back!
And there were some some vile tasting juices as well.

Pix: The real baker & Anusha

I guess this time some of the witches must have raided a Garnier godown. For many of them had wonderfully streaked hairs – florescent green, bright pink and green and flaming orange and red and some kids even had gold, silver and platinum shades!!

 Absolutely stunning !
And last year’s witch from the top floor returned and the huge pirate too! And spiders crawled into homes.

And quite a few new scary people joined the band.
We had a Simba, the huge majestic lion and Sher Khan the fearsome Bengal tiger with a curved trail.
And Simba also gave a subtitle to his thundering ROAR for the  benefit of all those hearig impaired folks in SP. What a thoughtful gesture. A true Lion King!!

Two young naughty devils with curved horns, one with platinum hairs and the other with bright red orange and black.

Lots of black robed witches and animated skeletons, captain James Hook.

And they all went happily stabbing at each other, clawing and making horrendous noises.

And the big witches and monsters were no less quite.
They were equally busy slicing each others throat, stabbing with kitchen knives, hammering people’s head and tearing at each other with inch long curved nails

And then much to everybody’s delight and astonishment, a huge glorious looking PUMPKIN rolled in.
And the most charming pumpkin I had ever seen! And the whole hall converged upon her.

And then the kids ganged up for the Trick or Treat sorties thru the various blocks!
And thankfully none of the top floors in SP were haunted this time.

However I got a huge shock this time.
The  scary creatures did not scare me out of my pants.
Nor did the witches push a 1000 volts probe into my guts.

I had been merrily clicking pictures from my camera for 20 minutes. And then to my utter horror I found out that I had no memory card in the camera!!

And you can well imagine what I got.
Some 1000 volts shock topped up with a million volt embarrassment!!!
